    There has to be a balance…

    Filed under: Yay! Mom;

    Being a mom these days is not an easy job. Some of my friends tease me about being a “stay at home mom” - they say “but you’re never at home”. And its true. We are out and about more than just staying in but I am still with my kids so that still counts - right?….

    The rules for the Stay at Home Mom are not clear. We aren’t the Leave it to Beaver mom’s or the Carol Brady’s. Mom’s in the new millenium don’t really seem to have a good roll model. We watch Nanny 911 or super Nanny with a little secret delight that those wild children are not our own.

    Being a mom these days has to include some sense of balance. Kids growing up these days are facing a whole new set of rules for communication and business that we were never exposed to and so how do we prepare them for that? This whole line of thought was inspired by a mom in the UK who has admitted to being bored by her children. To me this is a sad way to paraphrase an entire lack of interest in children’s video’s and children’s games. Who hasn’t been driven to near insanity after hearing the same song by the Wiggles after the 80th time. But dreading the Wiggles or silly kids games is completely different from being bored by the very children you gave life to.

    It has been pretty amazing but something I’ve found is that we can find a balance between the things I love to do and the things my children love to do. There has to be a balance between spending time with the kids and spending time alone with your darling hubby. (The better relationship you keep with your husband the better it is for the kids). Knowing that it is ok to go to a grown up dinner party or wedding without your kids - some events are not kid things and that’s ok. My husband loves the story of Tarzan of the Apes. So, he read that to the kids when they were little and they LOVED it. I loved the Secret Garden. So, I read that to them. And they loved it. It is ok to include your kids in things you enjoy. Just keep a balance in activity as well. Little kids have shorter attention spans - so don’t expect them to spend a day shopping at the mall and still be loving life at 5 ocklock.

    Here is the article that inspired this line of thought:
