We Just Want to Do Something

With everything that went on last week in Boston MA and West TX many of us our trying to figure out how we can help.

We posted an article here on things we can do.  READ HOW WE CAN HELP

One of the suggestions in How We Can Help that was posted last week was to give to the Red Cross.  There are all kinds of charities that we can give to and many ways that we can help.  But do we always know which charity is the right one? Or if our money is actually going to those who really need our help or just going to the charity organizer.

Charity Navigator is my go to site to make sure the charity I want to support is on the up and up.

Here are their recommendations for these two tragedies.

Boston Marathon Bombing: How to Help

West, Texas Fertilizer Plant Explosion: How to Help

One thing Moms in particular need to remember is that it is super important that we all take care of ourselves first and then help our neighbors.  Whenever you are on an airplane the steward/stewardess reminds us to put on our own airmask first and then help others.  This is important for us to remember as Moms.

We often give so much of ourselves that we can't always help others.

We CAN help the people affected in the Boston and West events especially if we make sure our family is strong.

If you can give financially then do that.  All of these families will have huge financial challenges ahead.
If you can't give financially then there are so many other ways that we can help too.
Remember too that there are families all over in your own community who are having their own tragedies that may never make the evening news.

Teach your kids that we need to reach out to our local communities and take care of each other too - even if it doesn't make the news.  The widow who may not want to let you know that she has been left with an almost insurmountable hospital bill and an inadequate life insurance policy, or the family that is struggling to provide Christmas presents for their kids, or the family that is hungry.  We can help our nation by helping our local communities.

And when you do give just make sure it is a reputable charity and not a rip-off.

At the end of the day we can all say a prayer for healing and for renewed strength.
