On a budget? There is still time for a great family getaway to the Midwest!

Moms, Take the Fam on a Budget Trip to the Midwest This Summer
by Gwen Little

For traveling moms on a budget, Wisconsin Dells is a premiere location for family vacations. The small square mileage has everything from waterparks to resorts to shopping to restaurants within a short distance, and there are plenty of discounts and specials. Here are five ways to save money and get a deal on your next family vacation.

1. Take advantage of multiple night discounts

Many hotels in the Dells area give you discounts if you're staying for three or more nights, and with as much as there is to do, you're probably going to want to stay as long as possible. Look into hotels with rooms that offer microwaves and mini-fridges at the very least. Book a full kitchenette preferably, to cut down on restaurant dining costs.

2. Map out local grocery stores

Kids can eat you out of house and home if you aren't careful, and it's no different on vacation. Instead of trying to manage a huge restaurant bill, find out where the closest grocery store is, and stock up on lunch and dinner staples. If you have a full kitchen or kitchenette, get food that can be prepared quickly and with a minimum amount of pots, pans and other kitchen equipment. Stock up on cold cuts, bread, peanut butter, jelly and enough protein snacks to keep everyone moving. With so many outdoor activities, stocking up on water is another way to save money rather than purchasing pricey bottles everywhere you go.

3. Check local event calendars for low-cost and free events

It can be difficult keeping your children entertained at a price point that doesn't break the bank. Many communities have free and low-cost theater, concert and other live events that are family-friendly and age-appropriate. For example, the Paint It Pottery shop has craft days your family can participate in.

4. Explore package attraction deals with your hotel

With as many waterparks and other natural attractions as there are in Dells, many hotels have partnerships with local businesses. There is a city pass available called a Splash Pass, which provides a plethora of discounts for the parks and other attractions. A Wisconsin Dells deal allows your entire family to experience the beauty of the Wisconsin River gorge, squeal in the delight of sliding down waterslides and end the day relaxing together under the stars.

5. Plan travel around the off-season

The shoulder season for vacations is the most cost-effective time to travel. Hotel and flight rates are cheaper, and generally there are plenty of promotions to entice tourists to come in during a low-demand time such as fall or winter. The other advantage is you're dealing with a lot less people during these times of year. Most Dells hotel pools are heated, so don't worry about cold pool water. There are several indoor waterparks and outdoor activities to keep you busy. If you have children who don't do well around crowds, this is a way to slowly ease them into a vacation setting.
